Put a transmitter on the ground and fly a drone first-person while your character waits beside it.
The drones
Put the transmitter down, place a drone within 15 m of it and press E on the transmitter. From then on you see through the drone's camera while your character stays put. With more than one drone in range, 0 lets go of the one you're flying and takes the next.
- DJI FPV (Acro quad): Keeps whatever angle you leave it at, like a real one in manual mode; The hardest of the three to land
- Mavic 3 Cine (Camera drone): Levels itself and stops when you let go; Cine, Normal and Sport, zoom up to 7x; Return to Home
- PG-7 (Kamikaze): Carries an RPG-7 warhead and flies once; A cheap analog feed: grain, interference that grows with throttle, a glitch or a rolling bar every 8 to 25 s; Night vision
Controls
- E: at the transmitter: fly a drone within 15 m
- W / S: DJI FPV, PG-7: throttle; Mavic 3 Cine: forward / back
- A / D: DJI FPV, PG-7: yaw; Mavic 3 Cine: left / right
- Mouse: DJI FPV, PG-7: pitch and roll; Mavic 3 Cine: turn, camera tilt
- LMB / RMB: DJI FPV, PG-7: throttle up / down; Mavic 3 Cine: up / down
- Wheel: DJI FPV, PG-7: throttle 1% per notch; Mavic 3 Cine: zoom, up to 7x
- 1 2 3: Mavic 3 Cine: Cine / Normal / Sport
- 4: Mavic 3 Cine: Return to Home
- 5: hide the HUD
- 6: Mavic 3 Cine: keep the horizon level
- 7: DJI FPV, PG-7: invert pitch
- 8: DJI FPV, PG-7: night vision (PG-7)
- 9: hide the controls list
- 0: let go of the drone, take the next one in range
- Space / E: leave the transmitter
Return to Home needs a home point, so land the Mavic where it should come back to and press 4 there first. The horizon lock on 6 is off by default.
Crashes
DJI FPV and Mavic 3 Cine, by impact speed
- From 4 m/s: The props snap and it drops. The camera keeps working, so you can still look around.
- From 9 m/s: The camera goes as well.
- From 18 m/s: There's nothing left of it.
Water shorts it out and it sinks.
The PG-7's warhead is a shaped charge. It punches through armour in the direction the nose points and gives out sooner in thick armour, and it digs into terrain and knocks trees over on the way. A propane tank in its path goes off too. Players only take damage on a server that runs Universal PVP, since in vanilla Creative they have no health.
How it's built
Scrap Mechanic doesn't let a mod move a HUD element once it's on screen, and an artificial horizon has to follow every bit of roll and pitch. The PG-7's horizon and reticle are world icons 2 km in front of the camera instead, and the game puts them in the right place on screen by itself. Icons can't rotate though, so the chevron is drawn 72 times, once for every 5° of roll. There's no post-processing in the game either, so the analog look is a stack of full-screen images. The grain sits on two layers, so you can't see the pattern repeat.
The Mavic's heading hold took three goes. Flying forward and sideways at the same time turned the nose, because leaning on two axes at once adds a little yaw. Our second fix held the nose dead straight in our own model of the drone and it still swung about 2.5° in the game. We logged a flight and found the engine applies only about 21% of the yaw acceleration a script asks for and 35% of the tilt, so the yaw correction kept arriving late. Now yaw gets its share of the torque before tilt does, and it's pushed 1.6 times harder, roughly the ratio of those two numbers. Going from W+A to W+D moves the nose about half a degree.
To move sideways the Mavic leans about 29°, and with the camera fixed to the airframe the whole view leaned with it. 6 keeps the horizon level, like DJI's Follow gimbal mode. It's off by default and only on the Mavic, because on a race quad the lean is how you can tell what it's doing. The first version read an axis that was 90° off and levelled the drone's nose instead of the camera.
At low frame rates the drone's own model would drift into the camera, so the pilot doesn't see it at all. Everyone else on the server does.

About
I'm V. I build apps, usually because I needed one myself, and some of them grow into something other people can use. And when I want to switch off, or an idea won't leave me alone, I make game mods.
I learn as I go. I'd rather solve a problem when it comes up than study the whole subject first. So I'm often bad with the names for things, but I usually know how they actually work. And I like to figure things out myself before I look at how other people did it.
